Information Technology Authority (ITA) and Oracle jointly conducted the third edition of the 4.0 Digital Trends Forum at the Oman Institute for Oil and Gas. A number of academics and specialists from government and private companies attended the forum.

The forum focused on the main technologies of this revolution, including machine learning, chatbots and Internet of Things.

Omar Salim Al- Shanfari, Deputy CEO for Operations at ITA presented a speech on the forum opening and highlighted the ITA keenness to utilize the new emerging technologies to enhance services delivery and serve the community better. He said, “We are working with our public and private partners to implement and utilize these technologies, and the government has implemented a number of pilot projects for smart cities in Al Irfan City, Al-Mouj Muscat, and Muttrah City. Recently, ITA signed an MoU with the Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) to implement a pilot smart city at Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) in cooperation with Madayn.”

Al-Shanfari added: “A number of suggested projects came as a result of the ICT Laboratory that was organized by ITA and the Ministry of Transport and Communication in cooperation with the Implementation Support and Follow-up Unit during February 2019.  The results include 11 initiatives that contain 25 projects, 11 of which are focused on providing apps, solutions and devices, while 8 projects concerns providing consultancy services, cloud, and cybersecurity businesses, and 6 projects focus on enhancing local competencies. We believe that these initiatives will provide at least 8,850 job opportunities for Omani graduates by 2024.”

Al-Shanfari called on government and private entities to keep pace with the Industry 4.0 technologies and start thinking about the new fields of specialization and fields that have become increasingly popular and necessary to facilitate human life. These specializations include data analysis, robotics science, cloud computing, cybersecurity, cryptography, programming and modern algorithms, cumulative production, 3D printing, and the use of digital technologies in business.
