Cairo – Lekela Power announced that it has reached financial close for West Bakr wind generation plant, its first wind project in Egypt.

The project is expected to deliver 250 megawatt (MW) of clean energy, according to a statement released by the renewable power generation company on Thursday.

Situated 30 kilometres north-west of Ras Ghareb, West Bakr Wind will generate more than 1,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) annually to power more than 350,000 homes after being operational in 2021.

This move is part of Egypt’s strategy “to generate 20% of [its] energy capacity from renewable energy by 2022,” the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company’s (EETC) chairman, Sabah Mashaly, said.

The project, which is part of the Egyptian government’s Build-Own-Operate (BOO) scheme, will increase the North African nation’s wind energy capacity by 14%.
