Experts to discuss paediatric care for congenital heart disease survivors and managing hydronephrosis in children

Dubai, 5 October 2015: With the support of the Dubai Healthcare City together with the Executive Board of Health Ministers Council for GCC States (KSA); Saudi Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition; and Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK), Dubai is set to host the first International Paediatric Medical Congress on 12-14 November 2015.

Regional and international healthcare experts in different areas of paediatrics will come together in this congress to provide a comprehensive review of the current issues and recent advances in selected paediatric subspecialty areas including: haematology, oncology, neurology, cardiology, neonatology, orthopedic, psychiatry and more.

Dr. Mohamed Hamdan, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist from KidsHeart: American Fetal & Children's Heart Center in UAE, is among the experts who will share his expertise on caring for children after repair of congenital heart disease. "As the technology improves, and as the intervention starts early, more than 90% of children [with congenital heart disease] are expected to live into adulthood," says Dr. Mohamed.

Early intervention combined with technological advancements create a challenge for paediatricians "who were not trained to take care of this number of children because in the old days, half of the children will die before they reach adulthood because of their heart disease", and this challenge is among the areas that he will cover in his presentation.

Another expert from Zayed Military Hospital in UAE, Dr. Iftikhar A. Jan, Consultant and Head of Pediatric Surgery, will share updates on managing hydronephrosis in children. "The most important aspect of this presentation will be to review hydronephrosis from the surgeon's perspective and to share the new advances in the care of pediatric patients with hydronephrosis," says Dr. Iftikhar. His presentation will also focus on how to investigate various cases of hydronephrosis in children; including standard criteria for various management options; its implications for the children; and the surgical procedures for various causes of hydronephrosis and their outcomes.

With children's health and welfare being a major concern for all healthcare practitioners and advocates, regional and international health authorities are encouraging the care of children by establishing world-class healthcare facilities, increasing awareness about diseases and organising medical conferences to ensure that doctors have the required knowledge. The congress aims to promote the advancement of the global practice of clinical paediatrics.
