Swedish energy storage company Azelio announced on Wednesday the inauguration of a technology demonstration project for its renewable energy storage units in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with Masdar and Khalifa University.

The demonstration project involved the installation of two commercial TES.PODs from Azelio as part of Khalifa University's Masdar Institute Solar Platform (MISP), the company said in a press statement.

Masdar will evaluate Azelio's energy storage technology for inclusion in its product portfolio for current and future renewable energy projects, the statement said.

The technology was first installed in Masdar City in 2020 and subsequently was supplemented with two commercial TES.POD units, manufactured in volume design.

Azelio said the units would also be demonstrated in a system where renewable electricity is delivered around the clock to a solution for generating atmospheric water, capturing, and condensing moisture into usable water.

In August 2021, Masdar announced that it is partnering with US-based water technologies company AQUOVUM and Khalifa University to launch the world's first solar and thermal energy storage-powered project to extract water from air Masdar City.

Providing an update on an ongoing project in Egypt, the statement said work on the conditional order with Engazaat is progressing.

"Our project has been expanded so that we, together with a supplier for desalination, will be able to sell clean water for sustainable agriculture instead of electricity. In this way, the customer will be able to conduct sustainable agriculture in a desert environment powered by solar energy."

In December 2020, Zawya Projects had reported ALEC Energy would install a long-duration energy storage system based on Azelio's TES.POD to power the visitor centre at Phase 4 of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Complex in Dubai.
