Emirati director by Waleed Al Shehhi’s Dolphins, which premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival (Diff), will release in the UAE on May 28. The film’s script won the IWC Filmmaker Award in 2013 at Diff, which aided in its production.

Shot in a record 25 days across Ras Al Khaimah, Dolphins tells the story of a divorced couple and their son, who over the course of 24 hours each set out on a journey of self discovery that eventually defines their destiny in the confines of their society’s structure.

“It’s an Emirati family but it could be in any society,” Al Shehhi said in an earlier interview with tabloid!.

While there are no actual dolphins in the film, it is used as a metaphor for which audiences will have to draw the link, he added.

This is the first feature length feature by the 38-year-old who has eight short films to his credit.

Al Shehhi submitted the script for Dolphins to the $100,000 IWC Filmmaker Award at Diff in 2013. He was selected as the winner by a jury led by Cate Blanchett, and along with a further Dh200,000 grant from Diff’s Enjaaz fund, had the film made to premiere at the festival in December last year.

Dolphins will be screened across the UAE at Vox Cinemas from May 28.
