UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Young UAE National engineers from Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, have held virtual workshops with over 400 students during online career fairs to help them become better prepared for their professional lives.
The workshops with the Ministry of Education, Khalifa University and UAE University, were organised as part of EGA’s Ambassador Programme, through which young EGA engineers and professionals conduct workshops for universities to discuss the applications in industry of students’ fields of study.
In addition to career guidance and advice, the sessions aimed to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, all vital to the achievement of Operation 300bn to grow the UAE’s industrial sector.
The sessions included an overview on women in heavy industries and a briefing on EGA’s production process. A workshop for students from grade 11 and 12 was held in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Education around the topic of innovation.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, EGA’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Through EGA’s Ambassador Programme, our young engineers open the eyes of students to everything they can achieve for the UAE by working in industry. We already have a significant industrial sector in our country, and Operation 300bn will see it grow even further. We need talented young people to not only to study science, technology, engineering and maths, but also to put it what they have learned into practice throughout their working lives.”
Due to the COVID-19 situation, the EGA Ambassador Programme has been conducting online sessions to support distance learning. The young EGA engineers and professionals have held 25 online seminars so far since the start of the pandemic, reaching more than 1,500 university students in total including students from the American University of Sharjah, UAE University, Khalifa University and the Higher Colleges of Technology.
Earlier this year, EGA and The Human Resources Authority (HRA) of Abu Dhabi signed an agreement to further bolster UAE National employment in line with Abu Dhabi’s goals for socio-economic development.
In December 2020, EGA partnered with the Ministry of Education and conducted virtual sessions with over 1,500 high-school students who had elected to pursue applied stream programmes with a focus on Engineering and Health & Safety.
