The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) said on Thursday that it has awarded a 20 billion Egyptian pounds ($1.3 billion) contract to The General Authority for Roads and Bridges to develop the Ain Sokhna Port.

The design-build-supervise contract involves the construction of four new basins with 12-kilometre long berths and a depth of 18 metres; and yards with terminals, spread over 5.6 million square metres and logistic areas spread over 5.3 square kilometres, SCZone said in a press statement.

These would be interconnected by a 14-km road network inside the port and by a 10-km internal railway network which would be connected to the Ain Sokhna - Alamein City high-speed passenger and freight railway project, the statement said.

SCZone Chairman Yehia Zaki said the project would be completed in two years in line with the high-speed railway project’s timeline.

“Sokhna port has been designed to be the largest hub port in the Red Sea serving the global trade movement between South and East Asia, South and West Europe and North Africa,” he said.

He said the port would also contribute to the transformation of the Sokhna industrial area into a global petrochemical hub.
