A major development of Al Fateh Highway, in Manama, will commence in the first quarter of next year.

It involves construction of an underpass and two overhead bridges, which will streamline the flow of traffic to and from Juffair and reduce congestion.

The project is being paid for by the Saudi Fund for Development, as part of a $10 billion financial support package pledged to Bahrain by its GCC neighbours last year.

“The Tender Board has announced that tenders have been issued for the development of Al Fateh Highway,” said Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf yesterday.

“Al Fateh Highway is the main artery for traffic east of Manama.

“This is part of another, bigger project – the Manama ring road – which aims to increase road capacity, ensure smooth traffic flow and higher levels of safety to cope with urban, demographic and investment development.

“It makes it easier for motorists coming from King Fahad Causeway, through Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway, the Bahrain Map Flyover, Umm Al Hassam intersection and Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP) to Al Fateh Highway.

“The ministry is developing Al Fateh Highway to reach Bahrain Bay and the Bahrain Financial Harbour through the Northern Manama Bridge.

“This will reduce traffic flow on King Faisal Highway to Al Farooq Junction and Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Highway.

“The project will help increase the economy in Bahrain and attract investments.”

He said the underpass and overhead bridges on Al Fateh Highway would help accommodate 140,000 vehicles daily.

“This project will increase the number of exits in Juffair,” he added.

“Al Fateh Highway will be made into four lanes in each direction, in addition to building a tunnel containing three lanes at the intersection of Al Fateh Highway and Awal Highway.

“The ground intersection will contain three traffic lights.

“In addition, an overhead bridge will be constructed with two lanes for traffic flow coming from Manama to Al Fateh Highway.

“Another overhead bridge, including a pedestrian bridge, with U-turns will be built near the entrance of Al Fateh Corniche.”

The project is expected to significantly reduce congestion on Al Fateh Highway, which currently handles 87,000 vehicles daily.

“The traffic flow is expected to each 138,000 in 2030,” added the minister.

“The project will help provide a smooth traffic flow for 140,000 vehicles daily on the highway.”
