Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Wednesday lashed out at both former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari, calling them looters of the nation’s wealth, and vowed to intensify his campaign against them.

Talking to media here Khan said Sharif had been stealing wealth from the country and moving it abroad for the past 30 years.

The justice system had not dared lay its hand on Sharif in the past, Khan said, but finally he was booked for his deeds.

Khan further said his focus would now be on Zardari.

He said there was no corruption in any province more than that witnessed in Sindh.

No government project was awarded without a bribe, and that ill-gotten money was being remitted to the Gulf region, Khan alleged.

“Asif Zardari as well as Nawaz Sharif are responsible for bringing this country to these [abysmal] levels,” he remarked.

He announced that he would hold a big rally in Karachi in the month of December around the mausoleum of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of the nation.

Supporting his claim he said that the size of domestic debt per capita was a mere 35,000 rupees (Dh1,219) some nine years, but had now reached 120,000 rupees, asking the two leaders where the money borrowed money was utilised.

He alleged Sharif destroyed all the state institutions and, to safeguard his ill-gotten money, he protected the other thieves.

“The scions of Nawaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar [former finance minister] have become billionaires,” he said.

“Our battle is not against Nawaz Sharif but it is against the corruption,” he said.

Khan said there was no difference between Nawaz Sharif and Khursheed Shah (the present opposition leader of Pakistan Peoples Party).

Lately, PTI was striving to woo other opposition parties in the national assembly to remove Shah as opposition leader in the lower house of the parliament and replace him with a PTI legislator.

He said his political battle was against Sharif and Zardari but not against their respective parties.

He also criticised the Election Commission of Pakistan saying it was unprecedented that an election commission might have issued warrants for a lawmaker.

The commission asked Khan to appear in its office to explain his position over the foreign findings to his party but he never appeared to the commission.

On Tuesday, Khan addressed a rally in Hyderabad city, where stuck to his guns over Zardari.

Khan was asked how a person like Zardari, who sold cinema tickets, became a billionaire. Refraining from talking much about Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Khan said that it was a mockery of politics that Bilawal was made chairman of PPP without earning even a penny.
