A car upholstery shop found to be illegally producing facemasks was shut down by the Department of Economic Development in Ras Al Khaimah.

Dr Abdul Rahman Al Shayeb, director-general of the department, said the illegal practice was detected during an inspection. "The seized facemasks did not meet the prescribed standards."

The shop was also not licensed to carry out such activity, he added.

"A grocery outlet was fined for selling these masks."

Two pharmacies were also penalised for failing to adhere to the set procedures of supplying masks, he pointed out.

"These pharmacies had hiked the price of facemasks."

Dr Al Shayeb said the public is advised to buy facemasks from trusted sources.
