Manama: Work on Bahrain International Airport’s Expansion Project is well on track, said Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Kamal Ahmed. A baggage handling system has already been installed which represents a crucial phase in construction operations.

The electronic seven-kilometre-long conveyor system will transport checked luggage from ticket counters to areas where the bags can be loaded onto aeroplanes in a short period of time.

The new system will also provide complete protection for baggage from loss or damage, thanks to its speed, flexibility, automatic control and efficient and smooth handling of luggage. A group of Bahrainis are being trained on the hi-tech baggage handling system, airport operation management, information technology, communication and marketing as part of preparations to inaugurate the new terminal.

“A total of 5,800 airport employees are also being trained on new systems and other information technology equipment,” said the minister. He said that up to 8,400 volunteers would take part in pre-opening trials, which include live experiences and real simulations of travel experience.
