Bahrain - A major expansion of a busy road in Saar will commence in June.

The plan involves a 2.5km stretch of Avenue 35, which runs past Saar Cinema.

It currently has one lane in each direction, but the revamp will add an additional lane on both sides – turning it into a four-lane highway.

Details were announced yesterday during a Press conference at the Northern Municipal Council, in Saar.

“This road is one of the most important in the Northern Governorate,” said Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry’s roads design section chief Maha Hamada.

“It serves as an important link to Budaiya and all other villages north and south of it.

Upgrade

“The whole road will be upgraded to two lanes in both directions, which will help traffic flow.

“There will be a service road at the side when available, which will have parking to benefit everyone there.

“A network for collecting rainwater will be installed as well, which will absorb any puddles that collect on the road.”

The project includes seven bus stops, five traffic light intersections and a central reservation with a barrier.

“There are more cars than ever in Bahrain and the Northern Governorate is the most density populated area in Bahrain, so this project is very important,” said Northern Municipal Council vice-chairman Ahmed Al Kooheji.

Work is expected to last from 12 to 18 months.

Other major projects for the Northern Governorate include a bridge linking the new Northern Town to the intersection of Budaiya Highway and Janabiya Highway, with work set to finish in the last quarter of this year.

There are also projects to widen Saar Avenue and Janabiya Avenue, an expansion of Budaiya Highway and a road linking the Northern Town with Budaiya.
