Iraq is planning to build a new city in the central Karbala governorate comprising houses, government offices, hotels, malls and other facilities, Karbala's governor was reported on Tuesday as saying.

Nasif Al-Khattabi said the local government is holding a series of meeting to secure funds for the project so it will be executed without any hurdles.

Quoted by Aliqtisad News and other Iraqi publications, Khattabi said the strategic project would be first of its kind in Iraq.

"This is a strategic project, which the local government is determined to undertake...it is an integrated, comprehensive city that will comprise government offices, consulates, mosques, hotels, shopping malls, parks, a university and educational zone, industries, and economic, entertainment and sport facilities," he said.
