Background

Nepal Telecommunications Authority planed to develop Nepal Optical Fiber Cable Information Highway Project - Smart Telecom Mid Hill Optical Fiber, from Musikot of Rukum (Province 6) to Jhulaghat of Darchula (Province 7) in Nepal. Smart Telecom Pvt Ltd was the main developer of the project. China Communications Services (Hong Kong) International Ltd was the main construction contractor. The project covered the works of laying optical fiber of 96-core along the Mid-Hill Highway in No.6-7 provinces, 48-core optical fiber in the routes connecting Mid-Hill Highway with district headquarters in both provinces and 24-core optical fiber along routes connecting district headquarters and rural municipalities of the districts in Provinces 6 and 7. The total length of the optical fiber was designed to be 2512 kilometers. The information highway would aid in the government’s target for easy, reliable and affordable high-speed broadband across Nepal. The government of Nepal planed to complete 15 projects in the next four years to build “Digital Nepal”. The Ministry of Information and Communications was willing to cooperate with various departments and contractors to achieve this goal at an early date. It would also deepen the cooperation between China and Nepal on telecommunication and the Belt and Road Initiative.
