DUBAI – The importance of coordinating policies between countries and international organisations to minimise the risk of natural disasters, and exploring ways to cope with climate change in the continent, were highlighted by speakers at Expo 2020 Dubai panel discussion Spotlights on Africa: Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate today (13 October)

Held at Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion, the event welcomed Dr Levi Madueke, Commissioner General of the African Union at Expo 2020 Dubai, as well as officials and experts from across the globe. Panellists asserted the need to maximise efforts to provide data and information on all kinds of natural disasters, to limit their effect on communities. They also underlined the need to support countries impacted by disasters, especially when they suffer massive losses of life and public and private property.

Participants affirmed the importance of monitoring natural disasters, activating early warning systems, developing and updating emergency plans and making necessary preparations, with a focus on efforts to educate communities about the devastating effects of such events.

Beginning with an introductory film on natural disasters in Africa, and regional and international efforts to mitigate their effects, the panel discussion pointed to modern systems designed to overcome natural calamities, outlining methods to minimise their dangers.

Dr Levi Madueke said: "We hope that countries around the world will help Africa overcome all the natural disasters it is facing.”

He asserted the need to provide sufficient and accessible information on disasters of this kind, to support swift action to face them and minimise the consequences.

Dr Roberto Rudari, Research Director and Project Leader at the CIMA Research Foundation, and Research Manager at University of Genova, Italy, said: "We see Expo 2020 as the perfect meeting place for various peoples and cultures. I believe that the people behind this global mega-event have the ability to effect change towards a better world of love and peace, leading to increased positivity and interaction between different peoples of the world.

“Countries must provide the necessary funding and support to confront climate changes and disasters such as floods, forest fires and earthquakes, which are already threatening the African continent.”
