The Egyptian Medical Syndicate (EMS) announced, on Tuesday, that the number of deaths among doctors from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased to 327 people.

The victims this week included: Dr Sabry Mahmoud; Mohammed Jaber Abdul Mahdi; Dalia Mohamed Awali; Mervat Khairi; Magda Mohamed Hamdy; Mohamed Fathy; Hossam El Din Sorour; Dr Nabil Kamel Aziz; and Dr. Manal Al-Sayed Hassaballah.

About 10,000 doctors have been infected with the virus so far across Egypt, according to EMS Undersecretary Najwa El Shafei.

As the pandemic’s second wave intensifies in Egypt and worldwide, the country’s medical workers have yet again found themselves on the frontline treating an increasing number of patients.

Medical workers at Egypt’s isolation hospitals have been given priority in receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, in addition to those suffering from chronic diseases and the elderly, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.

Ministry Spokesperson Khaled Megahed said, on Sunday, that Egypt is expected to receive new batches of COVID-19 vaccines during the coming days.

In statements earlier this month, Minister of Health and Population Hala Zayed said that Egypt has contracted to receive 100m doses of coronavirus vaccines through different companies. A total 40m vaccine doses will come from the China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm), besides 20m doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.

In December, Egypt received the first shipment of the Sinopharm vaccine, with support from the UAE’s G42 Healthcare.
