Facilities at public parks, gardens and walkways should be opened as precautionary measures imposed across Bahrain to limit the spread of Covid-19 have been relaxed, said an MP.

Parliament’s services committee chairman and Al Asala (Salafist) Bloc president Ahmed Al Ansari added that due to the efforts of the National Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus (Covid-19) and vaccination campaigns positive cases in the kingdom have decreased.

He called on the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry to reopen the facilities in public parks and walkways.

“These facilities – such as bathrooms – must be opened especially since many of the visitors to these places are the elderly and retirees,” he said in a statement.

“They have remained closed as part of the precautionary measures in place to combat the spread of Covid-19 but they must be reopened now as there is a gradual return to normal life.

“People who visit these places need these facilities especially elderly citizens and those with illnesses such as diabetes.

“There has been a significant decrease in the number of positive cases and many facilities across the kingdom have been opened so there is no justification to keep these facilities closed.”

The GDN previously reported that the task force had announced the four-tier traffic light system, based on the average percentage of positive cases out of daily Covid-19 tests.

Bahrain adopted the traffic light-style mechanism from July 1 to assess Covid-19 spread in the kingdom and signal what facilities and services will be available to the public.

The four levels are green, yellow, orange and red.

Bahrain adopted the green zone last Friday following a continuous drop in Covid-19 cases.

“There is no need to keep these facilities closed as all the facilities across Bahrain have been opened in accordance with the four-tier traffic light system,” added Mr Al Ansari.

“The relentless efforts of the task force as well as the national vaccination campaign and an increase in people registering for inoculation have contributed to the reduction in cases and the rise in awareness.

“The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry must collaborate with the task force to review the proposal to open the health facilities at these public places.”
