MANAMA: Bahrain has launched a crackdown on the misuse of social media that poses a serious threat to national unity and social security.

Chairing a weekly Cabinet meeting yesterday, His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa directed officials to deal firmly with sites that attempt to spark division through slander and rumours.

He instructed the Interior Ministry to take firm legal action against owners of such sites as well as cyber cells which co-operate with them.

He strongly condemned malicious sites and accounts which post tweets that seek to undermine civil peace in collusion with plotters and enemies of the nation, in Bahrain and abroad.

The Premier commended cohesive and conscious Bahraini society which thwarted attempts to divide citizens and spread the poison of disinformation in the society.

The Prime Minister welcomed a call by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to hold an extraordinary summit for GCC leaders and another for Arab leaders, in addition to that of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation in Mecca.

This reflects King Salman’s keenness on GCC and Arab co-ordination amidst current challenges and dangerous regional developments as well as the need to reach a unified stance, he said.

The call also confirms the crucial role of Saudi Arabia in leading joint Arab action to overcome the critical situation, the Premier added.

The Cabinet affirmed the kingdom’s firm commitment to support the Palestinian people and contribute to creating opportunities for them to improve their conditions and achieve their aspirations for an independent state.

The session underscored Bahrain’s backing of all initiatives aimed at stimulating investment in the infrastructure and facilities in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, citing the “Peace to Prosperity” workshop to be hosted by Bahrain in partnership with the US.
