Abu Dhabi’s Department of Economic Development (DED) has directed owners of food and beverage outlets to pioritise purchases from local suppliers.

A tweet by the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office said that Abu Dhabi’s DED “directs owners of food and beverage outlets in #AbuDhabi to prioritise purchases from local suppliers and to contact local farms, livestock keepers, local poultry farms and fisheries to set a monthly purchase programme, in order to support local production.”

The aim of the initiative is to ensure food security, support local commodities suppliers, encourage local agricultural production and maintain a sustainable local food supply to the entire community.

The UAE has also implemented previously a series of precautionary measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Schools, malls, cafes and restaurants have been shut, while all inbound, outbound and transit flights have been temporarily cancelled, as residents are being urged to stay indoors.

The country confirmed 241 new cases of coronavirus infection on Saturday, taking the total number of cases in the country to 1505.
