A new survey covering private training institutes in Bahrain has revealed accumulated losses of more than BD3.8 million amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The study was conducted by the Bahrain Society of the Private Training Institutes (BSPTI), which has called for an immediate stimulus package for the country’s 90 training institutes in order to stay afloat.

“The survey has revealed that total loss incurred by 90 training institutes has exceeded BD3.8m,” said society chairman Nawaf Jishi.

“These are exceptional times and require urgent stimulus package to prevent the closure of private training centres that support the economy and have a high Bahrainisation rate (of more than 70 per cent).”

The society has also called for a national plan to ensure funds are allocated to these training centres.

Mr Jishi said that along with the hospitality sector, this was among the most affected sectors since the outbreak of the virus.

“Many commercial establishments were allowed to reopen, while the training institutes are on the verge of closure and many are facing eviction due to non- payment of rents” he said.

“Majority of the 90 training institutes are owned by Bahrainis and provide job opportunities with attractive salaries for a large number of employees.”

He also called for authorities to allow private training institutes to provide virtual classes.

He added that these training institutes will play a key role in the post-pandemic era, with increased dependence on Bahraini workers in different sectors.
