Dubai – Mubasher: The number of passengers going through the Dubai International Airport (DXB) has witnessed a slight decline of 0.9% in November to 6.89 million passengers compared to 6.95 million a year ago.

As for the first 11 months of 2018, the figure grew by 1.3% year-on-year to 81.42 million from 80.38 million, recent data has shown.

However, in terms of who was passing through the airport during November, several nationalities travelled through the world’s busiest airport by international passenger traffic more than others.

Nationalities

Indians, who make up the majority of expatriates in the UAE, topped the list with 1.032 million passengers via the DXB in November, up 3.02% from 999,800 in October 2018.

Saudis ranked second with 509,450 travellers in November 2018, up 14.5% from the previous month when they reached 444,800, statistics compiled by Mubasher using official DXB data indicated.

Travellers from the UK ranked third in November with 466,460, down 7.2% month-on-month from 502,900.

Indian nationals, who represent around 30% of citizens living in the UAE, have continued to rank the highest amongst travellers passing through the emirate’s airport.

World records

The DXB sees roughly 7.5 million passengers a month. By the end of 2017, the airport had broken its own world record have receiving 8.3 million visitors in a single month.

The fact this is huge is because it took the Dubai International Airport 51 years to mark its 500-millionth passenger, however, it only took seven years (2011 to 2018) to reach its 1-billionth passenger.

Sector contribution to GDP

It is worth noting that the aviation sector currently makes up around 25% to 26% of Dubai’s gross domestic product (GDP), which confirms its important role in diversifying the emirate’s revenue resources as well as in supporting other sectors such as tourism and commerce.

The UAE government is looking to increase the aviation sector’s contribution to the emirate’s GDP to 37.5% in the DXB strategy 2017-2025. In addition, it is looking to provide around 745,000 job opportunities by 2020.

The Dubai International Airport is considered the world’s busiest airport in terms of international travellers, according to the Airports Council International (ACI), as it serves over 145 jets headed to over 260 destinations.
