Participation comes to promote the UAE Yacht Code, the first of its kind in the world

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The Emirates Classification Society (Tasneef), the first Arab certified classification body, is participating in the Dubai International Boat Show 2016, held between 1 and 5 March at the Dubai International Marine Club.

By participating in the Show, Tasneef aims to promote the UAE Yacht Code, the first of its kind in the world, specializing in "super yachts" that are longer than 24 meters.

The code launched last year, enables the government to register this type of yachts under the country's flag and issue a special registration certificate. Through this "code" the United Arab Emirates would be the first country in the world to have laws in place for all types of yachts, both commercial and private.

Yachts were previously registered in the state as commercial boats, which placed restrictions on the number of passengers, as well as the size of yachts and their capacity, which is not required under the UAE Yacht Code. However, the Code does include a number of specifications and requirements relating to safety, which are to be applied during the construction of the yacht depending on the areas each will sail through.

With this "code" the state has placed the laws on large yachts under global legislation. These laws were submitted to the International Maritime Organization, which distributed them to all members of the Organization under the name of "The UAE Code." These laws are characterized by high safety standards in order to preserve lives, property, and the environment.

Engineer Rashid Al Habsi, CEO of Tasneef, said: "The UAE Yacht Code puts the Emirates Classification Society among the most prominent and leading classification agencies in the world in terms of legislation and laws on large-size private yachts, which contributes to bridging the gap in global legislation in this regard."

Al Habsi pointed out that Dubai International Boat Show 2016 is one of the most important international exhibitions in the maritime sector, and thus serves as a unique platform for the society to promote the UAE Yacht Code. The event is in line with the strategic plans to support the yacht manufacturing industry in the state, and to apply global standards within a legal and legislative framework.

It is noteworthy that the issuance and granting of mandatory certification of ships registered under the flag of the state falls under the umbrella of the Emirates Classification Society in its capacity as a classification body certified by the Federal Transport Authority.
