Work on a new university campus opening its doors to students this September is nearly complete, with details discussed at a key meeting.

Details about the American University of Bahrain (AUBH) were revealed yesterday during a meeting between university president Dr Susan Saxton and Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company chief executive Mahmood Al Kooheji.

Mumtalakat invests in Bahrain-based Elm Education platform (Elm), which was established to develop the education sector in the country along with the Middle East and North Africa region, through which AUBH is operated.

The university, which is designed to cater to up to 4,000 students, is set to open in September with the introduction of colleges of engineering, architecture and design, along with business and management.

“At Mumtalakat, we believe that investing in education is an investment in the kingdom’s economy and future,” said Mr Al Kooheji in a statement.

“Education is the necessary building block for better health, employment and empowerment.

“On average globally, each additional year of education a child receives increases his or her adult earnings by about 10 per cent.”

He added that the demand for higher education continued to grow in Bahrain by 6pc accompanied with a growing youth population.

In another statement issued by the university yesterday, it was revealed that construction on the new campus was 95pc complete as the internal furnishings are currently being installed.

The campus is equipped with a sport centre with a full gym, an outdoor football field and a basketball court as well as four dedicated three-storey academic buildings, a welcome centre for administration and student services, among other facilities.

The AUBH campus, which is located in Riffa and occupies a 75,000 sqm land plot, will be ready for full handover in early August with easy access from two main highways.

“We are excited to see our beautiful campus come to life and to welcome the inaugural class of 2019 in September,” said Dr Saxton in the statement.

“The AUBH campus is unique in so many ways; we want to bring a truly American-style experience to the region and establish a model of international quality standards that will support the students’ life-long educational journey.”

The statement added that environment and sustainability played a major role in the campus design, to reduce energy consumption and response to local environmental conditions.

Meanwhile, Elm has also entered into a joint venture with a prominent operator of American curriculum K12 schools, to co-own and operate an American curriculum school in Bahrain and will continue to seek additional investments in the education sector in Bahrain and the Mena region.
