It's official. The five most dangerous roads in Dubai are Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road and Al Khail Road.

This was revealed by Brigadier Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic. He added that there has been a sharp decline in road accident deaths and traffic violations this year, thanks to road safety campaigns.

Road fatalities in Dubai dropped by 19 per cent during the first quarter of this year as compared to the same period in 2018.

There was also a drop in traffic violations by 6 per cent during the first quarter of 2019 in comparison to the corresponding period last year, said Brigadier Al Mazrouei. Dangerous violations, which topped the list of reasons behind fatal accidents during the previous years, also declined. Speeding violations dropped by 11 per cent in the first quarter of 2019 as compared to last year. Traffic violations recorded by traffic patrols saw a dip by 6 per cent, while those recorded by police stations came down by 16 per cent. Besides this, the traffic violations recorded by police management plummeted by 10 per cent.

Brigadier Al Mazrouei attributed the drop in the road mortality rate and violations to the traffic campaigns which raised awareness about road safety among the public. These campaigns sensitised them about the importance of adherence to traffic laws, while giving them tips on how to drive on the road without causing violations, he pointed out.

Awareness campaigns, workshops

Brigadier Al Mazrouei said that the General Department of Traffic organised three awareness campaigns in the first quarter of this year during which 71 awareness lectures were held, benefiting 26,497 beneficiaries. Two awareness campaigns were carried out in the first quarter of the last year, while 23 awareness lectures were delivered benefiting 16,410 people.

In the first quarter of 2019, the Dubai Police Traffic Institute organised 18 in-house workshops and 17 in-house courses. The institute also implemented nine discount courses to reduce traffic points, which helped 64 drivers during the first quarter of this year.
