The Dh635.7 million ($173 million) Madinat Zayed-Al Mirfa Road, a 52.2-km-long artery connecting areas within the UAE capital Abu Dhabi and the Al Dhafra region will be inaugurated in February 2019, a media report said.

Work on the project is moving at a steady pace with 91 per cent of the construction already completed, reported Emirates news agency Wam, citing the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi, DoT, and Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada).

The project's scope of work involves the construction of a road work from Madinat Zayed to Al Mirfa located at Al Dhafra Region, Abu Dhabi. The project involves a 2-lane dual carriageway, road lighting, an upper interchange, three under-crossings for U-turns, turnaround and crossing of wild animals, and construction of four ducts and three utility protection bridges.

The road will help reduce travelling times and improve the transportation of people and goods by 50 per cent according to the plan developed by Musanada in line with highest international standards and specifications.

Badr Al Qamzi, director of Integrated Transport Planning (DoT), said the road is one of the major infrastructure projects, which will help to strengthen the economy and society of the Al Dhafra Region, and meet the needs of its residents, in terms of services and facilities, according to the highest safety and security standards, while providing integrated transport services and solutions and adopting environmentally-friendly technologies.

He stated that speed on the road is expected to be set at 140kmh, adding that Abu Dhabi National Oil Company is planning to establish several service stations on both sides of the roads for the convenience of road users.

The project is part of Abu Dhabi’s strategic roads network plan to connect cities of the emirate, he noted.

Saleh Al Mazrouie, executive director of Road Network, Musanada, said the road will have the capacity of 5,400 vehicles per hour on both directions at peak hours. He expected the capacity to increase to 40,000 vehicles by 2020 and 50,000 by 2030.

''The road has six exits and three roundabouts so as to ease traffic congestion and ensure safe, smooth vehicular traffic,'' he said.
