Swiss-Swedish packaging giant Tetra Pak is planning to implement a local recycling solution for post-consumer beverage cartons in Egypt by 2021.

Marcelo Piva, Regional Sustainability Director Middle East and Africa said the company has identified potential recycling partners, mainly paper mills, for trials.

He said: "Industrial trials with Tetra Pak packaging material are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2020. This is an important milestone in our sustainability journey in Egypt."

He also added that the company has plans to introduce its plant-based Tetra Rex package in Egypt soon.

The company said that it over the last two years, it has partnered with several producers in Egypt to drive water savings worth $57,000 from five different projects and energy savings worth $70,000 in four different projects.

In June 2020, Tetra Pak announced a commitment to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its operations by 2030, with the ambition to achieve net zero GHG emissions for the value chain by 2050. The company will also set emissions reduction targets in line with 1.5°C according to the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative.
