The Faw Port being built in South Iraq will have the capacity to handle nearly three million containers when Phase 1 of the project is completed, an official from the Iraqi Transport Ministry was quoted on Monday as saying.

Ministry spokesman Hussein Khaffaji said Phase 1 would be finished within 3.5 years and comprises five main contracts.

“When Phase 1 is completed by Daewoo E&C, the port will be able to handle around three million containers per year,” he said in a statement carried by the Mawazin News network and other Iraqi publications.

Officials said in early April that Phase 1 comprises the construction of five large container berths and the main container handling area, digging of two external and internal canals, building of a tunnel to the nearby Khor Zubair and the construction of a motorway between Faw and Umm Qasr Port.
