Muscat: The Outward Bound International World Conference in Oman came to an end recently as 120 delegates from 32 nations gathered at the Rotana Sundus Hotel in Muscat after an intensive three days of workshops, discussions and networking at Outward Bound Oman’s desert training centre in the Sharqiya Sands.

Having initially been set up in the United Kingdom in 1941, Outward Bound has evolved into a not for profit organisation with a truly global footprint. Senior staff from training centres from as far afield as Zimbabwe, Mexico, Hong Kong and New Zealand, joined by their colleagues from Outward Bound Oman, shared thoughts, ideas and best practice to ensure the organisation, now 78 years old, remains resilient, relevant and focused on delivering long term outcomes that develop and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds.

Executive Director of Outward Bound International, the organisation that oversees the global network, Iain Peter, knows a thing or two about resilience, and the lessons that can be learned from stepping out of one’s comfort zone; in addition to climbing the north face of the Eiger, and ascents of Gasherbrum 2 (8035m) and Choy You (8201m), in 2007 Peter led an expedition that summitted the highest peak on earth, Mount Everest. He expressed his thanks to the staff of Outward Bound Oman for hosting the 2019 conference, and said that ‘I have been reviewing the growth and operations of Outward Bound Oman for several years now, and it has been good to see Oman evolve into an active member of the global Outward Bound community. The keys to Oman’s rapid growth are clear to see – transparent and effective governance, a great outdoor landscape in which to run courses, and a government and private sector who work together with a common interest to shape and nurture the human capital of the nation’.

Today Outward Bound has training centres in 32 countries, and whilst The Outward Bound Trust in UK was founded back in 1941, Outward Bound in Oman, the first Outward Bound centre in an Arabic speaking nation, celebrates ten years of operations in 2019. Established by Ministerial Decision under The Ministry of Social Development, Outward Bound has grown rapidly in Oman, today employing 33 full time staff, and delivering training courses for more than 2,000 people in Oman each year, a number that will increase in the coming years thanks to the construction of three national training centres.
