H.E. Khamis Juma Buamim, Chairman of Arab Association of Petroleum Professionals (AAPP) and the DCMMI Emirates, opened the two-day Inaugural International Offshore Development Congress (IODC 2019) at the Jumeirah Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi today.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, H.E Khamis Buamim said, “Regional Oil & Gas, especially Offshore sector, will see further growth in the coming years. According to reports, around one trillion is expected to be invested in the energy sector in MENA between 2019-2023, which will see a mix of natural gas, petrochemicals, and renewable energy development.  Offshore oil explorations remain an important part of the regional economy, and many shelved projects are back on stream following demand in various markets.”

“With the global economy becoming more distributed, the private sector has become a key player in offshore development in the region. It is also transforming by adopting a more collaborative ecosystem and  innovative technologies to enhance operations at every level,” he added.

He also opined that the new collaborative operating model between the Gulf and Asia has proven to be ideal for the oil and gas industry as it helps in fostering economic development in those countries. The oil is now being stored, refined and distributed in the consumer markets like India, thus allowing gulf oil producers to move away from traditional operating models and expand beyond to maximise their potential.

The congress will host various panel discussions, special session and technical sessions to explore opportunities and challenges in the offshore industry with a focus on the current economic scenario, demand fluctuation, operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, the role of renewables, and technological trends.

Organised by Arab Association of Petroleum Professionals (AAPP) and Maarefah Energy, the event is supported by DCMMI Emirates, World Ocean Council, ROPME, PERSGA, MEMAC and Oil & Gas Safety Council. Industry leaders such as Baker Hughes, National Marine Dredging Company, Schlumberger, Mubarak Marine, Weatherford, Wartsila, Bureau Veritas and Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre are sponsoring the event.
