Dubai: Dubai Police arrested 7,603 people wanted for financial cases this year and recovered Dh2 billion, an official said on Monday.

Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said the suspects were in the country.

One of them was an Asian man who was wanted in 54 financial cases worth Dh18.5 million. He had evaded arrest for years.

“There was a 16.2 per cent drop in the number of wanted suspects inside the country during the first six months this year compared to last year. Our security programmes managed to recover the money and reached settlement in many financial cases for wanted people outside the country,” Maj-Gen Al Mansouri said.

He said they succeeded in arresting 111 wanted persons through the international warrants.

“Dubai Police have excellent relations with many police departments around the world and cooperate with them by exchanging information, extradition and arresting the suspects,” he added.

Meanwhile, Colonel Saeed Al Qamzi, deputy director of the Wanted Department at Dubai Police, said that they managed to get extradition of an Asian man suspected of killing his countryman in Dubai in 2003.

“We arrested an Asian suspect who committed a murder in Dubai in 2003 over a financial dispute. We managed to get him extradited this year and referred him to courts 14 years after he committed the crime crime,” Col Al Qamzi said.

“We secured custody of 16 wanted suspects from different countries during the first half of the year,” he added.
