Manama: A Bahraini association representing local legal consultants said that it would go ahead with a drive to appoint only Bahraini citizens to advise state institutions and the parliament on legal matters.

“The tendency to recruit foreigners to such positions is no longer acceptable and undermines the right of Bahraini citizens to employment,” the Bahrain Legalists Society said.

“It is also a flagrant breach of the constitution,” the society said in a statement.

Bahrainis are highly qualified, the association said, adding that they hold high educational degrees and are experienced in their fields.

Recruitment, under Bahraini law, should always give preference to nationals, be it in the public or private sector, the association said.

“Any breach of this is a violation of the constitution.”

The group says it will meet parliament members and government officials representing various sectors to discuss the issue further.

No accurate figure on the number of foreign legal consultants working in Bahrain was available.
