Dubai: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has received the UAE Ideas Award for innovation and promoting business, in recognition of its deployment of special double T-Connectors to support faster restoration of electricity during emergencies. DEWA was honoured at the 9th UAE Ideas Conference & Award, which was organised virtually by Dubai Quality Group. The conference was held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Emirates Airline & Group and Honorary Patron of Dubai Quality Group.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, expressed his happiness at this award, highlighting Dubai Quality Group’s efforts to promote and consolidate a culture of innovation and its capability to overcome challenges. This helps it maintain its position as a creative Emirati platform that develops and encourages corporate excellence and quality practices.

“At DEWA, we work according to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to aid Dubai’s progress into the future and make it ten years ahead of other cities through government innovation. DEWA has in place an accurate system for risk management and resilience. It works on increasing its resilience and corporate agility by forecasting risks and preparing for rapid changes. This ensures business continuity according to the highest standards of availability, accountability and efficiency under all circumstances; to make Dubai the favourite place to live, work and visit. Despite the challenges imposed by COVID-19, our electricity and water networks in Dubai have proven their resilience, fast response, and adaptation to different emergencies and rapid change. DEWA has maintained its excellence journey and met its pledges to ensure reliable electricity and water supplies for all Dubai’s residents. In 2020, Dubai recorded 1.66 minutes, the lowest Customer Minutes Lost (CML) per year in the world; the lowest electricity transmission and distribution network-line losses of 3.3%, and the lowest water-network losses of 5.1%,” said Al Tayer.

The double T-Connectors shorten the time needed to restore electricity in emergencies from 40 minutes to 5 minutes. These connectors speed up the connection of mobile diesel generator (MDG) to electrical equipment in the substation Ring main Unit (RMU) according to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)’s requirements.

DEWA’s proactive measures, which have been in effect since 2009, significantly reduced the number of emergency cases. The PAS 60518:2020 Enterprise Risk & Resilience Management standard for the utility sector, developed by DEWA in collaboration with the British Standards Institute (BSI), consolidated DEWA’s leading position among global utilities.
