A new report from Arab Advisors Group assesses the Arab cellular markets’ intensity levels. Arab Advisors Group has devised the Cellular Competition Intensity Index which relies on a number of indicators that reflect the level of competition in the market, including operators’ market shares, the number of working operators, services and packages provided by each operator in 15 Arab countries.

In order to rate and properly assess the level of competition in Arab cellular markets, Arab Advisors Group has created the Cellular Competition Intensity Index. The index is relative in nature as it compares the state of every market relative to other markets. As such, even if a market’s absolute level of competition improved, its score in this relative index will also depend on how other markets developed. Arab Advisors Group also compared the Cellular Competition Intensity Index scores and rankings of the 15 Arab countries under study in October 2020 and August 2017.

Arab Advisors Group released a new report "Competition Levels in Arab Cellular Markets 2020". The report, which was released in November 2020, answers the following questions:

  • Which Arab countries topped Arab Advisors Group’s Cellular Competition Intensity Index?
  • How did Arab countries’ Cellular Competition Intensity Index scores and rankings change in 2020 compared to 2017?
  • How did telcos’ performance improve in terms of market shares?
  • Which Arab countries had an increase in number of working, licensed, and expected to launch mobile network operators?
  • How did telcos’ corporate, smartphone, postpaid, and prepaid offerings differ in 2020 compared to 2017?

“Arab Advisors Group assessed the Arab World’s cellular markets intensity levels in October 2020. The Group’s analysis revealed that Arab cellular markets are moderately competitive as half of the Arab countries analyzed had cellular competition intensity scores ranging between 50% and 59%. In October 2020, Palestine ranked first with cellular competition index score of 71.65%. The Palestinian cellular operators face competition from unlicensed Israeli mobile network and mobile virtual network operators, contributing to 40% of the country’s cellular competition intensity score.” Mrs. Dalia Haddad, Arab Advisors Group’s Lead Research Analyst noted.
