ABU DHABI- The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) has organised a webinar held via Microsoft Teams on "The Positive Effects of Law Provisions on Reducing Narcotic Abuse", with the participation of 65 students from Abu Dhabi University.

Held in cooperation with the Public Prosecution in Abu Dhabi, the webinar comes within the framework of the global events agenda adopted by the sector and in line with the strategic vision of ADJD to strengthen the rule of law by spreading the legal culture in the society, the ADJD Administrative Support Sector explained.

In the lecture, Dr. Mohammed Rashid Al Dhanhani, Director of the Abu Dhabi Centre for Community Legal Awareness "Masouliya" gave an introductory explanation about the crimes of narcotics abuse and the most important behavioural indicators which indicate the start of drug abuse by teenagers, and the solutions provided by the law to provide rehabilitation for drug abusers.

Besides, Dr. Al-Dhanhani has also discussed the legislative developments in the law of drug abuse, highlighting the legal perspective of drug abusers, how they are treated now as penitents as opposed to accused persons, which is positively reflected by giving more opportunities for treatment as a way of alternative penalties and not considering abuse for the first time as a criminal precedent.

Under the new law, the attorney general is mandated with the power to refer drug abusers to rehabilitation instead of initiating a criminal case, in addition to providing the possibility to request treatment for the wife and relatives up to the second degree.
