UAE-based Ducab Group, one of the biggest cable manufacturers in the region, has opened its 2-megawatt peak (MWp) solar power plant at its Jebel Ali head office site in Dubai, it was announced on Monday.

The plant was inaugurated by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in the presence of Ahmad bin Hassan Al Shaikh, Chairman, Ducab, according to a DEWA press statement.

The solar power plant, comprising of both rooftop and ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, was developed in partnership with DEWA unit Etihad Energy Service Company (Etihad ESCO), the statement noted.

It said the plant would produce 3.5GWh (gigawatt hours) of clean energy annually, equivalent to powering 500 homes or enough to run Ducab's on-site PVC plant.

With a design life of 25 years, the plant would offset approximately 660 tonnes per year of carbon dioxide (CO2), equivalent to the quantity of CO2 processed by 40,000 trees over 10 years, according to the statement.

The plant also integrates 150 kilometres of Ducab's specialist UL-certified SolarBICC range of wires and 300 sq. mm low voltage copper cables.

The project utilises DEWA's Smart Metering technology, remote monitoring of power output using a web/mobile app, and automated self-cleaning of solar panels using solar-powered cleaning robots, the statement concluded.
