Iraq has completed 80% of a project to connect the GCC power grid for supplying power to Iraq, according to a press statement issued by the electricity ministry.

The project to supply Iraq with electricity through the power grid will be completed within 14 months once it is launched, said the statement.

Phase 1 of the project includes supply of 500 MW of electricity to Iraq from the common grid in the six-nation GCC through an electricity station to be built in the Southern Iraqi port of Basra, Iraqi electricity ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Abadi said.

He told the official Iraqi news agency that Iraq has completed nearly 80% of its part of the project and that power supply is supposed to start in October.

"The GCC part of the project in Kuwait has not started yet as they are still trying to designate power towers and supply lines," he added.

"Supply of power to Iraq is scheduled to start in October but the project has now been delayed due to the decline in oil prices and the spread of Coronavirus, which negatively affected the economy in Iraq and the GCC. Once the GCC begins its part of the project, phase 1 will be finished within 14 months," he said.
