Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) announced on Wednesday that it has increased the annual capacity of its used tire recycling facility from 70,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes.

According to Tadweer's press statement, local firm Tarheel Collecting Wastes, which operates the facility, collaborated with its Italian partner to ramp up the facility's capacity with a new integrated automated plant.

Since the beginning of 2020, the facility has recycled nearly 17,000 tonnes of tires as of end of third quarter, the statement noted.

The statement said the facility aims to reduce the health and environmental risks associated with burning tires and landfill disposal while converting them into economic resources like Tire-Derived Fuel (TDF), which is used as an alternative fuel in cement kilns.

Tadweer is responsible for all activities related to the development of waste management services in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.
