Swedish energy storage company Azelio announced on Wednesday that it will supply a long-duration energy storage system for Phase 4 of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Complex [MBR Solar Complex] in Dubai.

The contract, the company's first commercial order in Dubai, was awarded by Dubai-based ALEC Energy, the project's lead contractor.

Azelio's energy storage would help power the visitor centre at Phase 4 by combining the firm's TES.POD technology with photovoltaic panels and Li-Ion batteries. Azelio's TES.POD will handle energy shifting for baseload power in the system, while the batteries will be used to manage mini-grid stability.

Noor Energy 1, a company owned by Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), ACWA Power and Silk Road Fund, is developing the 950-megawatt (MW) Phase 4.

"This is a major milestone for Azelio and we are thrilled to achieve it together with ALEC Energy. Being present in the world leading MBR Solar Complex allows us to showcase our solution to important audiences and demonstrate how our long-duration energy storage can make solar power available around the clock in an affordable way," said Azelio's CEO Jonas Eklind.

"Long-duration energy storage is a vital component in the transition from fossil to renewable energy and a key to provide clean and secure energy 24 hours a day. ALEC Energy is proud to pioneer Azelio's technology in this system," added ALEC Energy's General Manager James Stewart.

In July, ALEC Energy and Azelio had signed an agreement to for implementing energy storage projects in the Middle East and Africa targeting 49 MW of thermal storage. ALEC Energy is also installing Azelio's verification project in Abu Dhabi together with Masdar and Khalifa University.
