Oman Cement Company will soon issue tenders for a new cement plant in the Eastern port of Duqm at a cost of $212 million, an Omani daily said on Sunday.

The plant is located in the Economic Zone in Al-Wusta governorate and will initially produce 5,000 tonnes of clinker per day, Al-Watan Arabic language daily said.

It will be built on an area of 500,000 square metres to be leased by the Economic Zone Authority for 50 years, which can be renewed, the report said.

It quoted a statement by the company as saying the project is part of expansion plans and is intended to help Oman achieve self sufficiency in cement and cut a large import bill.
