Background

The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA), on behalf of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE), planned to rehabilitate the Hawassa to Hagere Maryam road from the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region to the Oromia region in Ethiopia. AIC Progetti SPA was the construction supervision consultant and Engineer Zewdie Eskinder Company Plc was the construction supervision sub-consultant. Sinohydro Bureau 11 Co Ltd was the construction contractor. Contract I involved the rehabilitation of the 66 km section from Hawassa to Chuko with a 7 m carriageway and 2 m shoulders width in each side. The purpose of the project was to ease the traffic congestion in the region.
