3*80 MW Nam Ngum 4 Hydropower Project

Ongoing

Background

Electricite Du Laos planned to develop 1*240 MW Nam Ngum 4 Hydropower Project, in Paek District, Xiangkhoang, Xiangkhouang, Laos. The project covered the construction of a 17 KM tunnel, 3*80 MW turbines, a 74-m-high dam with a capacity of 107400000 cu.m and so on. China National Heavy Machinery Corp was EPC contractor of the project. PowerChina Kunming Engineering Corp Ltd was the design&technical services consultant. Lao Cement Public Co was cement supplier of the project. The project was initially designed to be built as two dams but a survey found that if it was built as two dams the project would cause unsatisfactory environmental and social issues so the company had been given permission for one dam only. The project would maximize the efficiency of the Nam Ngum river hydropower cascade development and boost national foreign exchange reserves, greatly contributing to the economy and Lao people's livelihoods.
