Cambodia Fiber Optic Communication Network Project

Also known as: Cambodia FOCN Project
Ongoing

Background

Cambodia Fiber Optic Communication Network Co Ltd planned to develop Cambodia Fiber Optic Communication Network Project, in Kampot, Prey Veng, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Thom and Pursat, Cambodia. The project covered the construction of 1,000 kilometers of regional backbone in the less dense areas to improve backbone coverage outside of major cities and 1,000 kilometers of the metro network to provide coverage within the major cities. Fiber optic technology was a key ICT connectivity solution, enabling higher speeds, higher volumes, and more security that could benefit all subscribing households, companies and governments. It was crucial to support the growth of the modern economy where services and goods were increasingly provided and traded with the facilitation of the digital economy. Investment into fixed broadband infrastructure was correlated with economic growth. The EIA report of the project was published on Jun 2019. The project was expected to support the government’s information and communications technology (ICT) development plan, which aimed for 100-percent urban and 70-percent rural broadband coverage by 2020.
