Abu Dhabi: The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is organising various cultural events from 24 to 30 November, as part of their continuous efforts to spread Arab culture and promote cultural dialogue between nations.

Under the theme of ‘Constant Communication’, three events are set to take place at the Cultural Foundation. The ‘Orient Pioneers: Western Travellers and the Arabian Peninsula’ symposium will convene prominent Orientalists and scholars of regional history, and the accompanying exhibition of the same name will showcase rare historical images and a wide range of publications and documents pertaining to the experiences of Western travellers touring Arabia throughout the ages. The third event is the 7th Abu Dhabi International Translation conference, gathering renowned academics, specialists and publishers.

In other events across the emirate, that same week will see the annual Al Dhafra Book Fair taking place in Al Dhafra Region.

“These unique intellectual and cultural events taking place next month form part of our strategy to promote Arab culture and its components to the world,” said HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi. “With discussions highlighting the importance of building constructive dialogues between cultures and nations, the events will feature prominent specialists and leaders from around the world to shed light on cross-cultural exchange, whether by analysing significant writings by Western travellers, or by discussing the role of literature and translation as an effective tool for transferring knowledge, forging connections and enhancing understanding between peoples and nations. These events also stem from our commitment to support the ethos and efforts of the UAE's Year of Tolerance, demonstrating the value in strengthening bonds of understanding between different cultures through educational and cultural projects”.

The ‘Constant Communication’ week of events opens with the ‘Orient Pioneers: Western Travellers and the Arabian Peninsula’ symposium, taking place on 24 and 25 November. Prominent Orientalists, scholars of regional history, cultural specialists, writers and academics from the UAE and around the world will gather to discuss the writings and experiences of Western travellers in the region throughout the centuries, examining the challenges they faced while interacting with the local inhabitants.

Accompanying the symposium is the ‘Orient Pioneers: Western Travellers and the Arabian Peninsula’ exhibition. Open the entire week from 24 to 30 November, it will include a public programme of workshops alongside innovative displays of rare historical images and a wide range of historical publications and documents on the experiences of Western travellers touring Arabia.

The 7th Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference, taking place on 26 and 27 November, aims to highlight the role of translation in building bridges between cultures and nations. Expert specialists, academics and publishers will discuss how best to support the next generation in executing successful cultural exchange through translation, including developing the capacities of young translators and the benefits of preparing trained translators in professions across various industries. In addition, the DCT Abu Dhabi initiative Kalima will launch an Arabic to foreign languages translation project during the conference.

That same week, under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent Authority, Al Dhafra Book Fair returns to Madinat Zayed in Al Dhafra Region from 25 to 29 November. This second edition of the fair will see the participation of more than 25 local publishers and distributors, offering visitors a wide variety of the latest books and publications in all categories.
