Dubai: Under the Chancellorship of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, CEO and Chairman of the Emirates Group, The British University in Dubai celebrated the graduation of its 15th cohort of doctoral and Masters graduates at the Cultural and Scientific Association. The Ceremony was attended by His Excellency Andrew Jackson, Her Majesty’s Consul General of the British Embassy in Dubai, Dr. Nasser bin Ali Aljahouri, the Omani Cultural Attaché to the UAE,  the University’s Council members, representatives of its UK University Alliance, academic and administrative staff, and family and friends of the graduates.

During the ceremony, the University recognised Mohammad Hammad, Chief Executive Officer of Al Sahel Contracting (Al Nabooda Group), for their collaboration with BUiD.

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullah Alshamsi, congratulated the graduates and their families and added: “We are very proud to see our students graduate today and join the growing community of our alumni. The University has secured its place as the leading research-based institution in the region and has grown and expanded throughout the years, thanks to the Government of Dubai and the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, and their continued support and contribution to the success of the University. Today we are happy to announce the upcoming construction of our own permanent campus in Dubai International Academic City. This will be another milestone in the history of our University, under the valuable guidance of all our Council members led by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. We are especially grateful for the ongoing commitment of our Founders, Contributors and our UK Universities Alliance.”

Speaking on behalf of the University’s Council, Graham Outterside, Country Director, UAE, Rolls-Royce International, said “Education is the foundation upon which we build our future, and The British University in Dubai is a keystone of the education system in Dubai. Founded on the principles of the British higher education system over 15 years ago, BUiD has created what could reasonably be described as the best academic institution in the United Arab Emirates, certainly for postgraduate qualifications. No other organisation in the UAE can match BUiD in research and development.”

PhD in Education graduate Dr. Hani Albalushi, speaking on behalf of the graduates said: “Without the hard times, without the rigid assignments, without the deadline challenges, we wouldn’t be here today. I am sure everyone has a story to tell and an experience to share of determination and success. Let me share with you three lessons I learned from my PhD study at BUiD: I learned that life cannot beat you if you have a passion for your work; I learned that there is no such thing as a difficult job if you can cut it into small pieces; I learned that any dream can come true, if you can find a place to start.”

Dr. Albalushi expressed his gratitude to the University’s staff for their support and he also complimented Dubai, the City of the Future, on its hospitality and welcoming environment.

The British University in Dubai was established by a Government of Dubai decree in 2003 to be the first postgraduate university in the region, founded on British higher education principles and working in collaboration with leading UK universities. In 2017, the University was the first in the region to introduce blockchain verified certificates and this year all BUiD’s degrees were verified in blockchain with the co-operation of the University of Nicosia and through BUiD’s Dubai Centre for Risk and Innovation. This places BUiD at the forefront of distributed ledger technology enabling it to validate securely the qualifications of all its graduates.
