Dubai – United Arab Emirates: The 6th edition of the International Family Medicine Conference, successfully concluded today at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC), after 3 days of productive and enriching discussions on a number of topics related to family medicine. Held under the theme, “Improving Patient care with Innovation and Technology" this year, IFM highlighted the role of innovation in clinical care, education and medical research while also focusing on the impact of innovative drugs and devices in the prevention and control of chronic illnesses and non-communicable diseases. The event successfully attracted more than 3,000 visitors and participants over the 3 days.

On the third day, while addressing a number of key healthcare challenges facing the UAE, experts highlighted that there is worrying rise in the incidence of many lifestyle-related Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD’S) such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic respiratory disease. According to figures from the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention, NCD’s pose a huge burden and a major public health issue in the UAE, as they account for nearly 65 percent of all deaths in the country. This comes as, the UAE is a global and regional leader in combating and controlling NCD’s, supporting the WHO’s goal of reducing the number of premature deaths from NCD’s by 25 percent by 2025.

Speaking on the need to raise awareness about diabetes and their efforts to prevent the onset of this disease, Dr. Andrew Boulton, Worldwide Diabetes President, said, “The Worldwide Initiative for Diabetes Education is a non-profit foundation dedicated to improving the lives of people with diabetes by empowering healthcare professionals with training, education, and information on this disease. As part of our efforts at the foundation, we develop clinically-important and scientifically-relevant content and education to audiences across the globe, either by partnering with scientific conferences or holding its own free-standing educational courses. Our presence at the 6th International Family Medicine Conference here in Dubai shows our commitment towards General, Family, and Internal Medicine physicians and allied professionals, in order to provide a greater understanding of how to best manage patients with diabetes and subsequent complications, such as hypoglycemia, cardiovascular risk, neuropathies among other such diseases.”

He added, “The aim of Worldwide Diabetes is to help shape the future of diabetes by educating health care professionals in the prevention, early detection, and management of diabetes in order to provide optimal care. In 2020 and beyond, the foundation will continue to provide education toward this goal.”

On the final day, IFM conference discussed a number of topics under various themes related to family medicine such as Chronic Disease Management with Primary Care Settings - Managing Hypoglycemia in the type 2 diabetes patient and Challenges in the Management of Diabetic Neuropathy, while another key session under the title ‘Updates in Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes’ focused on many topics such as New Generation Basal Insulin – new evidence, Role of CGM in Diabetes. Moreover, one more session on ‘Updates in Cardiovascular disease and Diabetes addressed various topics including ‘The Power of Predictive Alerts in improving Diabetes management.

In addition, a key workshop on ‘Evidence Based Medicine Workshop for Family Physicians and Primary Healthcare’ was held on the final day where Dr. Noha Dashash, Consultant Family Physician, Assistant Director of Health Affairs, Ministry of Health, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Dr. Hanouf Bin Himd, Consultant Family Physician and Director of the National Transformation Administration, Jeddah, Ministry of Health offered their insights on the latest in evidence-based medicine.
