Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) Chairman H.E. Ali Al Jassim has been appointed as Vice Chair of the World Green Building Council’s MENA Regional Network — an influential group of Green Building Councils from the MENA region who are driving forward net zero, healthy, equitable and sustainable built environments in MENA. 

Nominated by EmiratesGBC, an independent forum aimed at conserving the environment by strengthening and promoting green building practices, H.E. Al Jassim was appointed to the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) MENA Regional Network for his leadership and dedication to the sustainable building movement, both in the United Arab Emirates and at a global level.

Cristina Gamboa, CEO of the World Green Building Council, said: “H.E. Ali Al Jassim has been a true champion of sustainability, and has worked tirelessly to position the best practices in the building and construction industry as central solutions to face the climate change, health and environmental crises.

“It is this commitment, expertise and strong leadership that has earned his place as Vice Chair of our MENA Regional Network. I look forward to working with Al Jassim as we continue our collective journey with our 70-member Green Building Councils to transform the built environment and deliver on the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development.” 

H.E. Al Jassim said: “To be appointed as Vice Chair of the World Green Building Council’s MENA Regional Network is a true honour and a testament to the work undertaken by the EmiratesGBC in promoting sustainable built environments in the region. Over the years, we have been leading concerted dialogue and tangible action in encouraging stakeholders across the construction value chain to incorporate sustainability as a core commitment. The new role will enable us to further activate dialogue with Green Building Councils across the region and together work towards promoting climate change action and work towards the net zero 2050 goal.”

HE Al Jassim has a PhD in Business Management, Master of Business Administration with Honours, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He has 25 years of experience in leading roles delivering programmes and projects and has held top positions in both the public and private sector. In addition to Chairing the EmiratesGBC Board of Directors, he is also a Board member of the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG)

The WorldGBC Governance team for the MENA Regional Network comprises of a Chair and Vice Chair who have been put forward by MENA Green Building Councils (GBCs). The Chair and Vice Chair guides sustainable building strategies for the MENA region, and ensures that MENA GBCs and WorldGBC are successfully delivering on their mission.

The following new Chair and Vice Chair have been appointed to the WorldGBC MENA Regional Network for the term of 2021-2023:

  • Chair of MENA Regional Network, Raji Hattar, nominated by Jordan Green Building Council, Chief Sustainability Officer at Aramex and Chairman of Jordan Green Building Council.
  • Vice Chair of MENA Regional Network, H.E. Ali Al Jassim, nominated by EmiratesGBC, Chairman of EmiratesGBC.
