Cairo: The growing role earmarked for technology in Egypt’s education system on the back of rising student demand was one of several topics explored by Mohamed El Kalla, CEO, Cairo for Investment and Real Estate Development (CIRA), in an interview he gave to Oxford Business Group’s online broadcasting channel, Global Platform.

While acknowledging that research and development (R&D) remained at an early stage, El Kalla voiced his confidence that change was on the way, spurred on by widespread awareness and a desire for action from the younger generation.

“I think Egypt is going to be in a very different place in the next five years in terms of innovation,” he said. “There is a national understanding that R&D is at a minimal stage currently, and universities are at the heart of this discussion. The good news is it’s coming from the students.”

Turning to the role of teachers and teaching practices, El Kalla said he expected these to evolve as education is brought in line with the digital world.

“Technology is going to be the cornerstone,” he said. “I think the laptop is a means to really teach students how to access knowledge. I see teachers transforming into facilitators within the coming years. They need to be able to work and focus on the student’s skill and ability to access rather than provide them with firsthand knowledge.”

El Kalla also told viewers that Egypt must provide business leaders with the vehicles they need to reap the rewards of their investment if it is to boost inflows.

“Investor interest is in place,” he insisted. “What Egypt really needs is for corporates to constantly try to work towards proving their management style, their access, their accountability and creating this blend in which they as much as possible keep quality and introduce this on a large scale.”

Marc-André de Blois, OBG’s director of PR and Video Content, said the interview with El Kalla highlighted the development under way in Egypt, driven forward by its burgeoning younger generation, as the country prepares for the next stage in its growth story.

“Egypt is taking steps to equip its sizeable population of young people with the tools they need to play an active role in a modern economy and to address skills gaps in the workplace, as our video shows,” he said. “I’m delighted that viewers have been given an insight into the seachange evident in the education sector of this important market and the investment opportunities that these efforts are producing.”
