Muscat - ZL EOR Chemicals Oman, which recently announced the opening of their polymer production plant in Raysut Industrial Zone in Salalah, is collaborating with the Sultanate Qaboos University to provide practical training to local engineers in chemical production, and is also looking at exporting speciality chemicals to other countries from the unit.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of an event held on Monday at the Crowne Plaza Muscat to announce the opening of the first-ever polymer manufacturing plant in the country, H H Sayyid Faisal bin Turki al Said, chairman of the project said, “We are also exploring possibilities of exporting products from the plant to other locations in Europe, the GCC region and Canada.”

These are the regions where polymer is used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods to arrest the decline in production in mature fields, said H H Sayyid Faisal.

Speaking about the project he said, “This whole initiative to a certain extent was my personal involvement. We are trying to seek foreign investments and to drive in-country valuations.”

ZL Chemicals, a Chinese firm, has been supplying polymers to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) for over two years. But PDO was very clear from the beginning about its intentions to set up a manufacturing plant in the country. After much due diligence, ZL Chemicals agreed to set up a plant in Oman, primarily to supply its product to meet the requirements of the country’s oil sector.

“Having a plant in Oman fulfils lots of requirements of PDO, most important of which is to have in-county valuations. Other important things are, bringing investments in the country and also to have transfer of technology for local usages,” said H H Sayyid Faisal.

On future initiatives he said, “We are looking forward to expanding our successful partnership with PDO and other Omani companies. We would like to acknowledge the continuous support of PDO, our Omani partners and authorities as well as the hard and dedicated work of our staff and contractors.”

He said, to train local youths in manufacturing speciality chemicals, “We’re talking to the Sultan Qaboos University, so that a collaborative programme can be launched for training local youths, particularly engineers in the field of speciality chemical productions.”
