On a record breaking path, Dubai is on its way to become the most active cities in the world, when the Dubai Fitness Challenge kicks off this weekend with its weekend carnival.

Health experts, who have been calling out to residents to be physically active, can't be happier.

"The initiative will serve as a starting point to advance the progress of healthcare and help encourage a positive change in people's lifestyles," said Dr Ahmed Abaub, consultant orthopedic surgeon, Joint Replacement and Sports Injuries Specialist at University Hospital Sharjah. "The ideal situation will be that people do not stop even once the 30 days are over," he added.

The challenge kicks off at Safa Park this weekend with an incredible two days of celebrity appearances, fun activities, team and individual sports, stage acts and a host of events to keep the adults, kids and entire families energised.

Encompassing all forms of activity - from walking, team sports, intense fitness regimes, paddle-boarding and aerobics to football, yoga, cycling and everything in between - the challenge will be an action-packed month of self-discovery, social interaction and enjoyment for everyone of all ages, abilities and fitness levels.

According to the experts, long term and regular physical activity will help in controlling weight, improving general health and preventing diseases such as stroke, metabolic syndrome, Type 2 diabetes, depression a number of types of cancer, arthritis and falls among other health benefits.

"The best kind of exercise is a brisk 30 to 60 minute walk, but any kind of sports activities will also keep people healthy in the long run," said Dr Roshan Oomen, general practitioner at Aster Clinic.

"Thirty to 60 minutes of exercise helps in protecting the vital organs of the body, since this activity helps reduce hypertension, diabetes and improves heart health," he added.

He also said that exercise promotes blood circulation and supplies blood to the brain, promoting mental well-being and is beneficial in the long run.

In an earlier interview, Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Tourism and Commerce Department (DTCM) said: "According to health experts, 30 minutes of daily physical activity was enough for people to either pick up a good habit or drop a bad one.

"This community movement is taking people outdoors, giving them an opportunity to connect with family and friends. We want people to change their lifestyles for the better."
