Bahrain registered the highest number of new Covid-19 cases in a single day yesterday, while also recording two more deaths, raising the total coronavirus fatalities to 19.

According to the Health Ministry, 605 new cases of the infection were registered yesterday, while the number of recoveries were 857.

The total number of active cases stood at 4,696 while total recoveries were 6,683, which, along with the number of deaths, made for a total of 11,398 Covid-19 cases in Bahrain so far.

Meanwhile, a 70-year-old Bahraini man and a 42-year-old expatriate man became the third and fourth deaths in less than 24 hours, after the deaths of two Bahraini men, aged 88 and 59, late on Saturday night.

The three Bahraini men all suffered from underlying and chronic health conditions and received extensive 24-hour treatment and care by a specialised medical team, along with the other active cases, at isolation and treatment centres, according to the Health Ministry.

“The Health Ministry announces the death of a 42-year-old male expatriate – a registered active case of Covid-19,” revealed the ministry in a statement yesterday.

“The patient, along with all other active Covid-19 cases had been placed in isolation and received intensive 24-hour treatment from a specialised medical team.”

Of the 605 new cases, 433 were among expatriate workers and 172 were contacts of active cases.

The ministry said 43 of the active case were receiving treatment while 12 remained on the critical list.

The surge in new active cases follows the five-day Eid Al Fitr holiday where people were urged to maintain social distancing and limit family gatherings to combat the spread of Covid-19.

Salons, barber shops and beauty parlours also reopened last Wednesday under directives to follow strict guidelines while restricting majority of the services.

These businesses had been shut down in March as Bahrain introduced stringent measures to battle the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the ministry also reported an additional 857 recoveries yesterday raising the total number of discharged patients to 6,683.

A total of 316,807 Covid-19 tests have been conducted so far.

The GDN reported last Tuesday that the ministry had said it had temporarily reduced testing capacity from 6,000 to 3,000 per day.

It said this was in line with international best practice that required sterilisation of laboratories designated for Covid-19 testing.

Bahrain has been witnessing an increase in daily Covid-19 cases in the last couple of weeks, from an average of 60 cases a day to an average of 200 cases a day with the numbers going over 300 in the last few days.

Yesterday’s 605 new active cases is the highest recorded number of new active cases in a single day, followed by 397 new cases registered on Friday and 360 new cases registered on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry yesterday stressed that anybody experiencing symptoms related to Covid-19 should contact the health authorities as early as possible, adding that the early detection of active cases provides quicker isolation, treatment and recovery response, as well as reducing contact tracing efforts.

The Ministry stated that the four recent deaths were due to complications from Covid-19 and partly because of delay in contacting the health authorities when the individuals were experiencing symptoms.
